When buying a home, it’s easy to focus on the things you can see right away. A beautiful kitchen, new flooring, or fresh paint can make a great first impression. However, there is much more to consider.
I’m Jaymie Barth, a Windermere Real Estate broker serving Maple Valley, Washington, and nearby communities. Before real estate, I spent 17 years as a Senior Property Manager. I also have 2 years of HOA management experience.
Because of my background, I tend to look beyond the surface of a property. My goal is to help buyers think about both the home they see today and the responsibilities that may come with owning it.
Think About Future Maintenance
Updated finishes can make a home attractive. However, cosmetic features are only one part of the picture.
Pay attention to the overall condition of the property. Look for signs of regular care and upkeep. Also, think about which areas may need attention after you move in.
A home does not need to be perfect. Instead, the goal is to better understand what you may be purchasing.
Every home requires maintenance.
For example, a larger yard may require more time and care. Older homes may have different maintenance needs than newer homes. In addition, certain features may add to future upkeep.
My property management experience taught me the value of regular maintenance. As a result, I encourage buyers to think about whether a property’s needs fit their lifestyle and budget.

A qualified inspector can evaluate many parts of a property and provide information about its condition. Therefore, buyers should carefully review their inspection report and ask questions when needed.
